When you’re a murderous madman, it’s good to take precautions. Or at least, that’s what Herod the Great is believed to have thought. This same monarch calling himself “King of the Jews” back in 40 BCE was also terrified his own people would revolt and he would become their victim. It might have had something to do with the way he worked together with the Roman occupation … or the fact he murdered his wife, other family members and all those rabbis … but for whatever reason, the Sanhedrin hated him, and so did every other Israelite.
